Lesson 1 — What Is Crypto & Why Does It Exist?

Welcome to Learn with Samaira. In this lesson, we will understand what cryptocurrency is, why it was created, and why people invest in it.

1. What Is Money?

Let us start with something we use every day — money.

Money is a way to exchange value. We use money to buy food, pay rent, receive our salary, save for the future, and make payments.

In India, we mainly use the Indian Rupee, or INR. Money also acts as a way to measure the value of things and as a way to store value.

2. What Is Digital Money?

Today, a large part of our money is already digital. When you use UPI, internet banking, or a debit card, you normally do not exchange physical cash.

The money is transferred electronically from one account to another.

So, digital money is not a new concept. The important question is: who controls and records that money?

3. What Is Cryptocurrency?

Cryptocurrency is a type of digital asset that uses cryptography and blockchain technology.

Bitcoin was the first major cryptocurrency. After Bitcoin, thousands of other crypto assets were created.

Unlike traditional money, many cryptocurrencies are designed to operate without one central authority controlling the entire network.

4. What Is Blockchain?

Blockchain is the technology behind many cryptocurrencies.

In simple terms, a blockchain is a digital record of transactions that is maintained by a network of computers.

Transactions are grouped into blocks, and these blocks are connected in a chain. This is where the name blockchain comes from.

The important idea is that the record is maintained by a network rather than depending only on one central database.

5. Centralized vs Decentralized Systems

In a centralized system, one organisation or authority has major control over the system.

For example, a bank maintains its own records and controls the banking system that its customers use.

In a decentralized blockchain network, the records and validation process are distributed across many computers participating in the network.

Bitcoin was designed around this decentralized model.

6. Why Was Bitcoin Created?

Bitcoin was introduced in 2009 by a person or group using the name Satoshi Nakamoto.

The idea was to create a form of digital money that could be transferred directly between people without requiring a traditional financial intermediary for every transaction.

Bitcoin also introduced a system where the supply is limited. The maximum supply is designed to be 21 million bitcoins.

This combination of digital transfer, decentralized operation and limited supply made Bitcoin different from traditional currencies.

7. Why Did Crypto Become an Asset Class?

Initially, Bitcoin was mainly seen as a new form of digital money. Over time, people started buying and holding Bitcoin and other crypto assets as investments.

As more people, companies and financial institutions became interested, crypto developed into a global asset market.

Today, investors look at crypto for different reasons. Some are interested in long-term investment. Some trade it in the short term. Others are interested in the technology and applications built on blockchain.

8. Crypto as Technology vs Crypto as Investment

This is an important difference.

Crypto can be viewed as a technology. Blockchain can be used for payments, digital assets, smart contracts, tokenization and many other applications.

Crypto can also be viewed as an investment. In this case, investors buy an asset because they expect its value to increase or because they want exposure to a particular blockchain ecosystem.

These two ideas are related, but they are not the same. A good technology does not automatically mean that its token will be a good investment.

9. What Are Investors Actually Buying?

When you buy Bitcoin, you are buying Bitcoin. When you buy Ether, you are buying Ether. When you buy another crypto token, you are buying that particular digital asset.

But the investment value depends on many factors. These can include demand, supply, adoption, technology, network activity, market sentiment, competition and regulation.

So, investors should not look only at the price of a coin. They should understand what the asset is, what problem it solves, how its network works, and why people may want to use or hold it.

Key Takeaway

Cryptocurrency is more than just Bitcoin and price charts. It is a combination of technology, digital assets and new financial systems.

Before investing in crypto, first understand what you are buying, how the underlying network works, and what gives the asset its value.
